Mission Statement
The Mission of St. Thomas More Catholic Campus Ministry is to continue building the faith life of the university community. As a Catholic Christian community we have much to offer in the areas of the spiritual, educational, service and fellowship opportunities. In contemplation and action, the faith life of each is enhanced and matured. In the strength of what is realized, we call this community to proclaim the Good News and to become signs of hope in our community, the Church and the world.
History of St. Thomas More at SU
| Early 1900’s | Establishment of the Brownson Club under the guidance and availability of a diocesan cleric. Social events or lectures were held in the old Knights of Columbus in the Larned Block. | |
| 1915 | The Brownson Club became the Newman Club. | |
| 1935 | The Rev. Gannon Ryan was appointed the first full time chaplain to the Newman Community | |
| 1939 | The Syracuse Diocese gave approval for the formation of the St. Thomas More Foundation – The Foundation raised funds to purchase More House Residence. | |
| 1962 | Under Monsignor Charles L. Borgognoni, land adjacent to 112 Walnut Place was secured and a naming gift for the new site was given by Mr. and Mrs. John G. Alibrandi in memory of their son. Weekly spaghetti dinner for invited students was started by Fr. Charles. | |
| 1991 | Rev. James P. Lang was appointed as Chaplain. Fr. Lang worked with the Foundation and the student body to continue the Catholic presence on campus. | |
| 1999 | The Conventual Franciscan Friars took on the Newman Center as part of their ministry. Over the following years, under the direction of Rev. Adam Keltos, Rev. Tim Mulligan and Rev. John Ruffo the ministry continued to grow. The More House residence became a community based on the Franciscan spirituality. | |
| Today | In November of 2007, Fr. Linus DeSantis, OFM Conv. started as Chaplain of Syracuse University. The four foci of Catholic Campus Ministry continues to be spiritual, educational, service and social. St. Thomas More Catholic Community whole heartedly embraces these elements. |
